Education Made Possible - Shamsunnahar's Journey

When Shamsunnahar was in the eighth grade, her father, who was a daily labourer, passed away. His earnings barely sustained the family, and after his death, her mother was left to care for the family, unsure of how to make ends meet. The days of scarcity seemed never-ending, and the years passed in hardship.

When Shamsunnahar was in the 10th grade, her mother and elder brother wanted to marry her off due to poverty. But she refused. Shamsunnahar was determined to continue her education and support her family before considering marriage.

Despite her determination, her mother struggled to keep the family afloat, and it became increasingly difficult to cover the cost of education for both her and her brother. To contribute, Shamsunnahar started tutoring local children, allowing her to pay for her education. Meanwhile, her uncle supported my brother's schooling. This is how Shamsunnahar’s family managed to survive, though the difficulties persisted.

In 2024, after completing her SSC exams, Shamsunnahar learnt about the free training programs offered by CMES in various fields, such as computers, garments, and vermicompost. She discussed the idea with her mother, expressing her desire to join the training since she was at home with no other opportunities. Her mother advised her to talk to her brother, who was initially reluctant. However, after explaining the benefits, he agreed to let her enrol.

Shamsunnahar joined the CMES Empowering Women and Girls Project, where she received three months of computer training. Additionally, she attended awareness classes twice a week, where participants discussed various important topics such as property rights, women's rights, gender equality, and overcoming the challenges faced by women in society.

Through these sessions, Shamsunnahar learned technical skills, how to become financially independent, and how to improve the quality of her life. Inspired by what she learned, she expressed her desire to make a difference. CMES staff connected her with local enterprises, and she was offered a part-time job at the Union Parishad.

With a monthly income of approximately 1,500 BDT, Shamsunnahar now contributes to her education and helps her mother with household expenses. Her goal is to continue her studies, secure a good job, and support her family. The training Shamsunnahar received through the CMES Empowering Women and Girls Project has transformed her life.
